Understanding Expected Progeny Differences (EPDS)

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) serve as a fundamental tool for beef cattle selection, helping ranchers make informed breeding decisions. Today’s cattle producers utilize a range of measurements, indexes, and genomic technologies to enhance herd genetics and overall performance.

An EPD predicts how an animal’s future offspring will perform by estimating its genetic transmitting ability. These values are expressed in units specific to each trait, indicating whether an animal is above or below the average within its group.

Determining Accuracy

Accuracy for an EPD may range from 0.0 to 1.0. As the accuracy approaches 1.0, the EPD is more reliable and changes less as data is accumulated in the future. 

 

Accuracy can be rated as follows:

 

LOW – 0.0 to 0.50

MEDIUM – 0.50 to 0.75

HIGH – 0.75 and above

Genetic Selection Indexes

Genetic selection indexes help beef producers make informed breeding decisions by combining specific EPDs and weighted traits. These index values provide a targeted approach to genetic improvement, allowing producers to align their herd’s development with specific production goals.

$Bull Index

The $BULL Index is a terminal selection tool designed for producers focused on selling cattle through grid pricing. Carcass weight is the most heavily weighted trait, with a strong positive correlation to frame score and all weight traits. As a result, animals selected using this index tend to be larger-framed and exhibit enhanced growth potential.

This index prioritizes cattle with low birth weight (BW), strong calving ease (CE), and a favorable spread from BW to weaning weight (WW). Additionally, it incorporates scrotal circumference and docility while maintaining a moderate emphasis on carcass traits.

The primary objective of the $BULL Index is to identify cattle ideal for producing bulls that can be successfully marketed to both commercial and purebred breeders.

Queen Index

The QUEEN Index is a maternal selection tool designed to take a balanced approach to cow selection. With no correlation between frame score, milk production, and back fat, selecting replacement heifers using this index will not increase mature cow size or impact milk production.

This index places greater emphasis on scrotal circumference, docility, and calving ease compared to the $BULL Index, as these traits serve as key indicators of early puberty and overall manageability.

In essence, the QUEEN Index helps identify ideal cattle for producing high-quality replacement heifers.
